The downstairs of our home (we live in a bi-level) has remained mostly unchanged since we moved in 2 years ago, so when I started to get the itch to work on a home project this area was an easy go-to. Over the last few weeks we’ve added new paint, a gallery wall, wall sconces, and the most beautiful sideboard you could dream of! We still have a handful of things we need to complete the space (curtains, light fixtures, and photos in said gallery wall >.<), but I love the progress so far! I’m so excited to share more, but today I’m sharing a project I finished over the weekend!
The short walkway into our downstairs family room has always been an area I’ve struggled to decorate. I went back and forth with whether I wanted a console table or photo ledges there, but ultimately decided on a console. I searched FB Marketplace for weeks for the perfect one but nothing matched the size, style, or price point I was looking for. Finally this past weekend, I found one that checked all the boxes and was a great deal at only $80 (I negotiated down from $100). It was in great condition minus the stain spill on the top. Had it not been for the stain, I honestly would have kept it the same color but in hindsight I’m so glad I painted it because I LOVE how it turned out! Scroll to see the before and after pictures.
Tips When Buying Furniture
1. Always measure your space and ask for dimensions of the item to see if it will fit
2. Mark the designated area with tape to see if it will look good in your space
Here was the original stain spill on top:
After sanding and scraping the stain we were able to get it down to this:
Now came the fun part – paint! I had some leftover black paint (Totally Black from Behr) I used so I wouldn’t have to spend any extra money. Here’s what it looked like with one coat on:
And here it is after 2-3 coats! I kept the original hardware because I love how the gold looked against the black paint. Is it just me or does this console table looks like something straight out of a Restoration Hardware magazine? Cue all the heart eyes!
I added a runner beneath the table because there are a few spots on the carpet from the previous owner that we haven’t been able to get out so I wanted to cover it for the time being. This amazing rug from Target was only $21! I loved it so much I got another one for our kitchen. You can see below how I styled the console with this large canvas art (that I scored for FREE 99 on Marketplace!) and some other thrifted treasures I had laying around. I’m thinking of putting some small stools or baskets under the table and adding a picture light above the art but for now my heart is content.
